Does ok on all bands, but the Retekess TR629 has digital tuning and keypad entry for AM step tuning that requires 10 Khz spacing, (not really an issue on this model other than the weak signal tuning could be better) but it can't lock on weak AM signals as it drifts a lot once tuned in and SW with the whip is fine but the frequency is off on both settings., (SW1/SW2). plus the TR629 only needs 3 D batteries and this needs 4 D.The SW signals come in pretty clear, but since I tried it at dusk, I don't know how the day-time frequencies come in, (yet). No issues with FM as it's a DSP radio, it has the old style LED bar graph that indicates signal strength power and tuning, I have not seen one of these in a radio since back in the 80's when just about every boombox had one.I had to keep the volume pretty low as this thing does go pretty loud, which is good for weak signals on any band.Since the only other flaw is the SW tuning accuracy is a bit off 10 Mhz shows up closer to 9.2 than it does on the lower side of 11 Mhz on the dial.I bought it on sale for around $38 recently, but I still prefer the direct tuning access of the Retekess TR629 even though it does not go very loud by comparison of this model. So whether you prefer this model or the TR629 is probably down to just personal preference, plus if you need it loud on SW, this is a pretty good model even if the tuning isn't a sure thing stability-wise like the TR629.If the drifting isn't a big issue, then this is probably a better deal because you don't have to worry about the batteries dying like in the TR629 because of the constant current on the power switch, etc.I am impressed with the fit and finish of this radio. I intend to use it primarily for AM BCB DXing. Battery life should be excellent. This radio reminds me of Panasonic radios of the 70's & 80's. Sound quality is excellent with a 6" speaker.I love this purchase and I am probably going to order another one. The sound is clear and I love the speaker size on this radio.RegaloI needed a radio to replace my desktop radio and this fit the bill perfectly! I ordered it in the morning and had it by dinner time (KUDOS!!!). It's perfect to listen to with headphones, earbuds, and the speaker is powerful enough to fill the room. I like it very much! And the price was great!Retro is bestI was hoping this was going to be a better piece of gear than it is, and I was sadly disappointed right from the beginning - the packaging was trashed inside the flimsy unpadded baggie that Amazon is famous for... the radio wasn't damaged; but the MP3 player can't handle variable bit rate tracks without skipping. Then while loading the batteries, I noticed that the bottom of the case was so poorly molded, there's a gap in the middle of the battery door. The radio is obviously based on DSP, as you can hear it kicking in on AM and SW. There's little to hear on shortwave these days, so that's not really of interest to me. The FM is really sensitive, and that works pretty well, once you get used to the DSP effects on tuning there. So, the bottom line is that I'm keeping it, only for the FM. You can likely find something better for the money here.I use this radio in my sewing room. Easy to adjust sound volume.
