Don't underestimate this little paperback guide: it works! Author Craig Buck makes it plain that he's not trying to write a 5-pound tech manual: he's trying to get you to pass your General Exam. The cover is printed "THE EASY WAY! "ALL HAM AND NO SPAM" That's a bit funny, and I'd not call the exam easy, but Craig zeroes in on ways to prompt you to recall the right answers. He gives brief technical explanations where helpful, but he cuts out a lot of verbiage, culls out all of the wrong answers, and presents for your eyes and your memory the right answers. The method works.I ignored his advice to forego practice tests until all the way through his book; it's more fun to take the tests online. I wish I had followed his recommendation, and worked his book thoroughly, all the way through, maybe 2 or three times, and then started testing. I found myself returning to his book to emphasize learning the RIGHT answer. The book is well-organized such that you can readily locate specific questions by the number. At the end is a shortened repetition of questions with correct answers in bold. Great for review.I wanted the ARRL's study guide (used it for Tech exam); it makes a good overall textbook, too. But, Craig's book is concise, aimed at getting you to the right answer, compact and effective. I found it unnecessary to take pages of notes, as I had done with the ARRL manual. So, it's inexpensive and unpretentious--but if you want to study effectively to "take it to the next level," I recommend Craig Buck's test-passing manual.
